This Gate Actually Opens! Easy Fall Card with Painted Patch (Video)

There’s something extra fun about a card that has a little surprise built into the design—and this one definitely does!

At first glance, it looks like a pretty fall card with a gate across the front. But that little gate actually opens to reveal the pumpkins tucked behind it! And while it gives the card an interactive WOW factor, the construction itself is surprisingly straightforward.

For today’s project, I’m using the Painted Patch Designer Series Paper (DSP) along with warm fall colors and a few simple details that really bring that little gate to life.

I love projects like this because you don’t necessarily need a complicated fun fold to make a card feel special. Sometimes one unexpected element—like a gate that really opens—is all it takes.

A Little Gate with a Fun Surprise

The gate is definitely the star of this card!

I cut the gate pieces from Golden Glow cardstock with the Painted Pumpkin Dies, but this time I doubled the opening portion of the gate by adhering two die-cut pieces together. That little bit of extra cardstock gives it more stability, especially since this is the part your recipient will be opening and closing. I also die-cut the tiny hardware details from Secret Sea cardstock and added them to the gate. They’re such small pieces, but I love how those little details help bring the whole gate—and the card—to life.

The little Basic White sign hanging from the gate is stamped with Secret Sea ink and attached with White Textured Ribbon, while a small Flirty Flamingo vine adds an unexpected pop of color.

Then open the gate…

…and there are those pumpkins!

I cut the pumpkins directly from the Painted Patch Designer Series Paper with the coordinating dies. If you don’t have the dies, take another look at your patterned papers before ruling out an idea like this. Images such as these pumpkins can often be fussy cut with your Detail Scissors instead.

Don’t Toss That DSP Scrap!

Here’s a little detail I especially love about this card. When I start with a 6″ piece of Designer Series Paper and cut my 3-3/4″ x 5″ front layer, I have a 1″ strip left over. Rather than tossing it into the scrap pile, I cut that strip to 3-3/4″ and used it along the bottom of my inside Basic White layer. It coordinates perfectly because it came from the same paper, adds almost no extra work, and gives that leftover piece an immediate purpose.

I added another pumpkin cut from the Designer Series Paper and stamped my sentiment above it to finish the inside. It’s a simple detail, but I think carrying just a little bit of the design to the inside makes a handmade card feel extra special.

In today’s video, I’ll walk you through the entire project step by step, including how I assembled the gate, added the hardware details, created the hanging sign and positioned those pumpkins so they’re waiting behind the gate when it opens.

I hope this card reminds you that an interactive card doesn’t necessarily have to mean a complicated card. Sometimes one simple moving element is enough to create that little moment of surprise when someone opens your handmade card.
