Today I am sharing a cool technique we did at our Diemonds team meeting called Tarnished Foil. Today’s card is inspired by one created by Melissa Kerman.
We wrapped a piece of 3 3/4″ x 5″ Very Vanilla cardstock in aluminum foil and then did the tarnished foil technique. Here is a pdf to show you how to create this look.

For this card, after I embossed the layer with the Butterfly embossing folder, I applied a bit more Black Archival ink to the surface to give it a bit more definition.
Card Layers:
- 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ (folded in half) Very Vanilla card base
- 3 7/8″ x 5 1/8″ Basic Black cardstock- die cut butterfly out of center of layer
- 1 3/4″ x 2 1/4″ Gold Foil- diecut
- 2 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ Silver Foil- punched
Before I adhered the foil layer to the Basic Black layer, I cut the detailed butterfly image with the Move Me Thinlits out of the center. This is a great way to save some cardstock.
I cut the small open butterfly out of Gold Foil paper from the Butterflies thinlits and adhered it to the back of the detailed butterfly with liquid glue.
I used the 2″ circle punch to punch out a Silver Foil circle to layer between the die cut butterflies and the front card layer to finish my focal point.
I added a quick birthday greeting on the inside of the card with the Happy Birthday Gorgeous stamp set. Really you could change your greeting to almost anything. This layout is so versatile.
