Remember the special Birthday pop-up card I made for my friend Paige I shared the other day? Today I want to share the steps to create the outside card.
Did you miss the original post with the instructions on creating the inside pop-up box? Click here to see it.
I started out with (2) 5 1/2″ x 6″ pieces of Bermuda Bay cardstock for my card base.
In one of the pieces I cut slits over 2″ and 4″ from the edge, starting each slit 1/2″ down from the top edge and stopping 1/2″ up from the bottom edge. This will make your slider.
I cut (2) 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips of Bermuda Bay cardstock to use as my stoppers.
I cut another 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips of Bermuda Bay cardstock and scored it at 1″ and 3 1/8″ to wrap around the pull tab.
The pull tab is cut 7″ x 2″ and scored at 1″ and 1 1/8″. I also used the Scallop Tag Topper punch to give it a nice finished look at the opposite end.
I adhered one of the strips of Bermuda Bay cardstock along the top edge of the slit card base with Tear & Tape.
Slide the scored strip thru the slits as shown below and push all the way to the bottom of the slits in the card base.
Place the pull tab so it is centered between the slits and the top score line falls at the bottom of strip. Fold the strip around the pull tab and adhere it to the front of the pull tab. Be sure the strip is not wrapped to tight around the tab. You want this to be able to slide up and down thru the slits in the card base when pulled.
Once the strip is adhered to the pull tab it should look like this. This is the inside of your card.
This is what the outside looks like when you flip it over.
On the inside of the card base add Tear & Tape along the top strip as shown below. You do not want any adhesive on the pull tab itself.
Fold up the bottom of the pull tab along the score line. This will be what grabs your box and pulls it out when you pull the tab.
Adhere the 3rd strip over the top of the pull tab.
To give me a “handle” to hold at the top of the card base I cut a 1″ x 1″ piece of the Bermuda Bay glimmer paper and scored it at 1/2″ (note the pic below shows this piece at 1 1/2″ long, but I thought it was sticking up too much so later removed it and cut it down)
I rotated the card base so the pull tab was at the bottom and adhered the folded glimmer paper piece to the card base so it was against the bottom of the pull tab.
I also stamped a greeting on my pull tab just above the strip so you will not see it when the pull tab is closed.
Add foam tape along the top and along the sides of the card base. I put an extra strip along the glimmer paper tab to keep it secure.
I flattened my pop-up box and placed it on the card base to be sure the placement of my foam tape was good and then adhered the card front to the tape.
To cover the slits on the back of the card I added some tear & tape along the glimmer tab to add a bit more security and then added tear & tape along the top and bottom edge of the 5 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ Elegant Eggplant layer and then placed it on the back to cover the slits.
I added a 1/2″ strip of the glimmer paper along one side of the Elegant Eggplant layer. I flipped the card over and add the Elegant Eggplant and Bermuda Bay layers to the card front as well.
To finish the card I embossed a 1″ x 5″ strip of Elegant Eggplant cardstock and banner cut the end. I tucked this under one side of my decorated 5 1/2″ x 3 1/4″ Very Vanilla cardstock layer and added the die cut candle layer using dimensional dots.
I had so much fun making this one that I have to teach this in an upcoming FMN class…maybe in June we will give this a try!
Hope You Enjoy,
