Easy Sunflower Card with Designer Paper & Stickers (Video)

Easy sunflower card featuring Stampin' Up! Sunflower Fields Designer Series Paper and coordinating stickers

Have you ever fallen in love with one part of a coordinating collection—but weren’t quite sure you needed everything that went with it?

That was me with the new Sunflower Fields collection from Stampin’ Up!

The beautiful Designer Series Paper (DSP) immediately caught my eye, but I decided I didn’t need the coordinating stamp and die bundle. Instead of passing on the collection altogether, I chose the pieces that inspired me and started creating with those.

And I absolutely love where it took me!

Today’s easy sunflower card is a great example of something I tell crafters all the time: you don’t have to own every coordinating product to create something beautiful.

Sometimes the patterned paper, a few coordinating elements and supplies you already have are more than enough.

And if putting all those different pieces together feels intimidating, don’t worry. That’s exactly what I’m going to show you today.

Let the Designer Paper Do the Work

One of the things I love about Designer Series Paper is that so much of the creative work has already been done for us.

The colors coordinate. The patterns work together. And those beautiful designs can give us a starting point when we’re not quite sure where to begin.

For this card, I combined several elements to build one layered focal area.

I started with that rich brown/copper specialty paper in the background, then brought in both the plaid and floral patterns from the Designer Series Paper.

Rather than asking one pattern to carry the entire design, each little piece adds something different:

  • the floral pattern gives us the beautiful sunflower imagery,
  • the plaid introduces another pattern and color,
  • and the specialty paper adds richness and shine.

Together, they create much more visual interest than any one of those pieces would have created alone. And yet none of it is particularly complicated. That’s an important distinction! Interesting doesn’t have to mean difficult.

Build a Focal Point One Layer at a Time

If you look at the finished card first, the focal collage might seem like there are a lot of things happening.

There are!

But the trick is not trying to design the entire grouping all at once. I built it one element at a time.

I die-cut the decorative label from specialty metallic paper and looped Linen Thread through the openings before tying it into a double bow. Then I added the circular sentiment and the small sentiment banners from the coordinating sticker sheet.

A few embellishments finish everything off.

That’s it. Paper. A die-cut shape. Thread. Stickers. Embellishments.

Individually, they’re all simple elements. It’s the layering that makes the finished project feel special.

So the next time you’re struggling with a focal point, try not to ask yourself: What does the whole thing need?

Instead ask: What is one more small element I could add?

A strip of patterned paper?
A label?
A little texture?
A bow?
An embellishment?

Building in small steps can make designing feel much less overwhelming.

Yes, You Can Make a Beautiful Card with Stickers!

And can we talk about those stickers for a minute?

Sometimes we think of stickers as something we might add as a little finishing touch.

But there’s absolutely no reason they can’t become an important part of the design.

For this card, I used the coordinating sticker sheet for the circular sentiment, the small banner details and even the sunflower accent I carried to the inside of the card.

They gave me beautiful coordinating imagery without needing to stamp and color those individual elements.

That doesn’t make the card any less creative.

It simply gives us another tool for creating the look we want.

I’m always going to choose the technique or product that helps me enjoy the creative process—and I hope you’ll give yourself permission to do the same.

Don’t Forget the Inside

You know I love carrying a little bit of the front of my card to the inside.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate.

For this one, I added a Basic White layer for plenty of room to write a personal message. Then I repeated a strip of the plaid Designer Series Paper and added one of the sunflower stickers.

Those two little details immediately connect the inside to the front.

It’s simple, but when the recipient opens the card, it makes the entire project feel thoughtfully finished.

Ready to Create This Sunflower Card?

Sometimes seeing the finished card isn’t enough. You need to see how all those individual pieces actually come together.

That’s what I’m sharing in today’s video.

You’ll see:

  • how I combined different Designer Series Paper patterns without making the card feel too busy,
  • how I built the layered focal collage one piece at a time,
  • how the specialty and metallic papers add richness to the design,
  • how I incorporated the coordinating stickers,
  • how I added the Linen Thread through the die-cut label,
  • and how I carried the design to the inside of the card.

Most importantly, I hope you’ll see that a card with lots of beautiful detail doesn’t necessarily require a complicated process.

A Little Creative Permission Before You Go…

I hope today’s project gives you permission to look at coordinating collections a little differently.

You don’t have to buy every piece.

You don’t have to create exactly the way the collection was presented.

And you certainly don’t have to pass on a beautiful paper just because the coordinating stamp set isn’t right for you.

Start with the part that inspires you.

Then look through the supplies you already own and ask yourself what you could pair with it.

That’s where your own creativity starts to come through.

When you fall in love with a Designer Series Paper, do you usually want the whole coordinating collection—or are you happy choosing your favorite pieces and mixing them with supplies you already own?

Now I’m Curious…

I’d love to know which kind of crafter you are!

Thank you so much for choosing me as your Stampin’ Up! demonstrator and for supporting my small business. I appreciate every order and, even more, the opportunity to help you find new ways to enjoy your creative time.
