Easy Handmade Card That Looks Anything But Simple (Video)

Easy handmade card in Hydrangea Hue with layered floral ephemera and Sending Love sentiment

Have you ever looked at a handmade card and assumed it must have taken forever to make?

Sometimes the projects that look beautifully detailed are actually built from a handful of very simple choices—and today’s easy handmade card is a perfect example.

We’re combining a stamped background, layered shapes and ready-to-use floral ephemera to create plenty of visual interest without lots of complicated techniques or coloring. And that’s one of the things I love about this design. You can sit down, enjoy a little creative time and walk away with a beautiful finished card without making the process harder than it needs to be.

This project is also one of the Make-n-Takes I designed for my Diemonds team this month. I love creating projects for my team that give them ideas they can enjoy themselves and adapt with the supplies they already have.

Why This Easy Card Design Works

A simple card doesn’t have to look simple. The secret is giving your eye several interesting details to discover without making every one of those details difficult to create.

For today’s card, I started with Hydrangea Hue cardstock and added floral stamping in Hydrangea Hue and Secret Sea. That tone-on-tone stamping adds interest to the background without competing with our focal point. Then the layered shapes in the center give us a strong foundation for the sentiment and flowers.

And here’s where we can save ourselves some time. Rather than stamping and coloring every flower individually, I’m using some of the beautiful floral ephemera from the Violet Dreams Specialty Designer Series Paper (DSP) pack. It gives us those gorgeous botanical details almost instantly.

Add a little Wink of Stella to the white flower petals and a few Adhesive Backed Blooms and Rhinestone Basic Jewels, and suddenly this easy design feels much more special.

It’s a great reminder that you don’t need to add more work to add more impact.

What You’ll Learn in Today’s Card-Making Video

In the video, I’ll show you:

  • How to combine tone-on-tone and contrasting stamping to create an easy background
  • How layered shapes can quickly create a strong focal point
  • How to use ready-to-use ephemera to add beautiful detail without lots of extra stamping and coloring
  • How a few small finishing touches can elevate a simple card
  • How to carry elements from the front of your card to the inside for a coordinated finished design

If you’re short on crafting time—or simply don’t want every project to become an all-afternoon affair—this is a great layout to keep in your idea file.

Let Your Supplies Do Some of the Work

One of the easiest ways to make card making feel overwhelming is to think that we have to personally create every single element on the card. We don’t.

Patterned paper, ephemera, die-cut pieces and other ready-to-use elements can do some of the creative work for us. That doesn’t make your card any less handmade. You are still the designer.

You’re choosing the colors, arranging the elements, deciding where your eye should travel and adding the details that turn those individual pieces into a finished project.

For this card, the floral ephemera gives me a quick shortcut to a beautiful focal point. That leaves me time to play with the things I do want to create—the stamped background, the layered centerpiece and those little finishing touches.

That’s a trade I’ll happily make!

Don’t Forget the Inside of Your Handmade Card

I could have stopped when the front was finished, but you know how much I enjoy carrying a little of the design to the inside.

For this one, I added a Basic White cardstock layer and repeated some of the floral and texture stamping from the front.

The inside sentiment says:

I appreciate you

It’s a small detail, but repeating elements from the card front makes the entire project feel intentional and complete. And it means there’s a little something special waiting for the recipient when she opens it, too.

Project Layers (Imperial):

  • 5-1/2” x 8-1/2” Hydrangea CS
  • 5-1/4” x 4” Hydrangea CS
  • 5-1/4” x 4” Basic White CS
  • Ephemera: labels, flowers

You’ll see how I build the stamped background, layer the focal point, add the floral ephemera and finish the card with just enough sparkle to make those details shine.

The finished project has plenty to look at, but none of the individual steps are difficult. That’s exactly why I think this is such a useful design to have in your creative toolbox.

You could easily take the same basic idea and change the colors, sentiment or focal images to create cards for birthdays, thank-yous, thinking-of-you occasions and so much more.

Simple Can Still Be Special

I hope today’s project gives you permission to make things easier sometimes. Every card doesn’t need an elaborate technique, hours of coloring or dozens of individually created pieces to be worth giving.

Sometimes it’s simply about choosing a few beautiful elements, putting them together thoughtfully and adding those little details that make the finished project feel like you.

And when you find an approach that gives you beautiful results without taking all afternoon…Keep it in your creative toolbox and use it again.
